Cape Girardeau

Cape Girardeau is a historic Mississippi River town located in southeast Missouri. This thriving city is a regional hub for business, education, healthcare and culture. Downtown Cape Girardeau is known for its many unique shops, historic architecture, riverfront and numerous festivals.

Cape Girardeau is one of the larger DREAM communities, with a population of 37,535 and three distinct downtown districts. The DREAM Initiative has already begun addressing the detailed development plans for the downtown area, also known as Old Town Cape. Recommendations and plans include a residential infill development focused on sustainable design, creation of a University Village on Broadway and development of a regional attraction in a downtown aquarium and river research center focused on the Mississippi River.

The DREAM Initiative has already helped foster revitalization in Downtown Cape Girardeau. Projects include:

  • Converting the former Schultz school building into senior apartment housing through financial assistance from the Missouri Housing Development Commission
  • Securing a Preserve America grant to develop a way-finding plan and branding campaign for Downtown Cape Girardeau
  • Utilizing the Home Repair Opportunity (HeRO) program, a Missouri Housing Development Commission program, to repair 10 homes downtown
  • Rehabilitating a number of buildings in the Old Town Cape district, including a former furniture store on Broadway which will open as the Discovery Center Children’s Museum in the spring of 2010
  • Constructing a new public parking lot on Main Street, near the riverfront, utilizing state and local financing
  • Helping the City of Cape Girardeau update zoning codes with new design standards for the Old Town Cape district to help preserve and enhance the historic character and design of buildings in the district
