Excelsior Springs

The City of Excelsior Springs is a quaint and historic Missouri town of about 11,000 residents located in the scenic countryside northeast of Kansas City. Convenient to both rural and metropolitan areas, Excelsior Springs’ residents have a strong sense of community and consider it a friendly, safe place to raise a family.

Excelsior Springs was selected as a DREAM community in Fall 2006 and has begun work to recapture its status as a tourist destination. Since 2006, the DREAM Initiative planning process has resulted in approximately $5 million in public funding, and $27.5 million in private funding for Downtown Excelsior Springs. Projects include:

  • Converting the former Oaks Hotel into the Oaks Apartments Senior Housing project with 42 senior apartments using help from the combination of a federal HOME Loan, federal and state rental housing tax credits and historic tax credits in 2006
  • Rehabbing the First National Bank Building in 2007 through the use of state historic tax credits
  • Leveraging the DREAM Initiative designation in its application to become a Preserve America Community; upon receiving the designation, the City of Excelsior Springs is eligible to receive federal grants to assist in marketing initiatives
  • Utilizing the Home Repair Opportunity (HeRO) program from the Missouri Housing Development Commission to repair several houses within the Downtown Excelsior Springs DREAM boundary in 2008
  • Expanding the role of the Downtown Excelsior Partnership to lead revitalization through use of the Department of Economic Development tax credits, allowing the Partnership to establish an executive director position
  • Coordinating discussions between the City of Excelsior Springs and the Missouri Department of Transportation to facilitate new way-finding signage on state roadways in and around the city limits throughout 2009
