St. Joseph

Founded by fur trader Joseph Robidoux and incorporated in 1843, St. Joseph is the largest city in northwest Missouri and the seat of Buchanan County. In its early days, the city was a rough-and-tumble outpost and supply destination for those traveling west via the Missouri River. Today, the City of St. Joseph is an active city of almost 74,000, making it the 8th largest in the state.

In 2006, St. Joseph was designated a DREAM community, which has led to the city accomplishing a variety of projects, including the following:

  • Using Federal HOME Loan, federal and state rental housing tax credits and federal and state historic tax credits to rehabilitate the San Regis Apartments into affordable senior residential units
  • Establishing Empower, a neighborhood assistance program by the Heartland Foundation, in an old St. Joseph Power & Light warehouse
  • Utilizing the Home Repair Opportunity (HeRO) program funds from the Missouri Housing Development Commission to rehabilitate several homes throughout St. Joseph
  • Adopting a Downtown St. Joseph Tax Increment Financing Redevelopment Plan and implementing tax increment financing for a portion of downtown to facilitate the achievement of the city’s vision of Felix Street as downtown’s “Entertainment Corridor”
