Kirksville, the Adair County seat, is located in north-central Missouri, about 90 miles north of Columbia. Kirksville has many amenities, including great parks, conservation areas and two renowned universities. Kirksville is the hub for business, manufacturing and retail activity for the region.

Downtown Kirksville is the center of activity for the community and houses the County Courthouse, City Hall, movie theatre and numerous retail stores and restaurants. The downtown is bordered by A.T. Still University, Truman State University and historic residential neighborhoods.

Downtown Kirksville has maintained a significant amount of investment over the years, most recently that activity includes:

  • Hiring an executive director for the Kirksville Downtown Improvement Committee, Inc.
  • Restoring numerous historic facades with technical and financial assistance from the state
  • Commissioning a historic architectural study of the downtown area
  • Utilizing the Home Repair Opportunity (HeRO)program, a Missouri Housing Development Commission program, for the renovation of qualifying properties
  • Overseeing the historic restoration of Travelers Hotel into affordable living spaces
  • Restoring the historic storefronts into Pickler’s Famous Retail Development
  • Creating a downtown tax increment finance district to fund public infrastructure improvements, including parking lot development, beautification and streetscape projects
